5 Things Beginner Sewers Should Know

Learning something new can be an overwhelming and intimidating experience. From learning the new lingo, to buying all the materials to just being afraid to fail. There’s levels of anxiety that can rise up from this trying new things business. Believe me, I should know since I just picked up roller skating during the pandemic. That’s a post for another day though. The focus of this post is to guide those who repeatedly tell me they wish they knew how to sew after watching one of my videos or who ask if I teach any sewing classes.

It’s hard to start something new, but more importantly, it’s harder to change your mental mindset as you pick up something new. We fear failing, wasting time and money and a bruised ego which makes you weigh if starting something new is even worth it.

Well, I’ll tell you now, if it brings you joy and makes your better person in anyway, it’s definitely worth it. But if you aren’t sold, you can continue to watch the following videos. They were originally specified for sewing, but you can use what I say as gems for starting any of your other interests or towards designing your best life.

What to do If You Want to Learn How to Sew

Starting something new isn’t easy. It takes time, determination and intention among other things. Watch this video for the 6 steps you should take if you’re picking up sewing for the first time or dusting off your machine.

Now that you know the steps, what do you need?! There’s so many products on the market but what’s essential? What do you really need to get your sewing journey underway? This video will super helpful for you as I advise 10 of the basic, bare essential tools that you’ll need to pick up.

Don’t Be a Lazy Sewer

Have you ever been so comfortable with something that you often “take the short cut” or “not follow the procedure” because it’s so much easier and less time consuming if you don’t? *Raises hand. As much as we like to take the easy way out, being lazy can can have a negative affect on your results. In this video, I’m urging you - and myself - to not cheat and to not be a lazy sewer by doing all the necessary/recommended steps of sewing, pre-shrinking your fabric or not testing stitch qualities.

Now that you’re a all set up to do this alone…let’s get you some help and some friends. You may the only one physically at your machine but that doesn’t mean you have to do this alone.
