Project Runway: Episode 6: There IS Crying in Fashion
This weeks Project Runway's episode started with the designers and judges participating in a press night. The designers had a brief moment of relaxation where they had interviews with bloggers and had the opportunity to sit down and chop it up with the judges. No lie, I probably would have been a little nervous to have an actual conversation with Zac Posen. I want to be you someday and I'm supposed to sit down and talk to you like your an average person? I don't know about that one!! It was a great opportunity for the designers though; not to mention, it humanized the judges.
The relaxed vibes didn't last too long though. What seemed like a chill night was the beginning of the designers next challenge. Surprise, surprise.
The designers were introduced to a representative from the new Absolut Elyx luxary vodka brand who explained the drinks amazing-ness. Heidi then followed up with the challenge details and instructed the designers they would get a $300 budget to make a luxury cocktail dress inspired by the Absolut Elyx loft they were at.
I was expecting it to be an unconventional challenge where the designers would take items from the loft, but an "inspired by challenge" is good too.
I actually loved the space. It was very industrialized and reminded me of the industrial studio that I hope to have one day. There were copper elements, pipes and wood with velvet furniture to soften the place up a little bit. The drinks were served in copper pineapples, which I obviously thought was cool.
The most eye catching element was the copper, though. There was a copper crystal ball, the pineapple cups, furniture; so much copper. A purple velvet couch also caught my eye.
At Mood Fabrics, I would have tried to find something copper. Copper but metallic. As I was looking on line, I thought about purple too. Purple is a lux color and signifies royalty. I'm not that accustomed to purchasing expensive fabrics so my thought process for this challenge would have been to buy different fabrics that fit into the budget instead of buying a high priced fabric. I would have liked options during this challenge, since like many of the designers, luxury would be new to me.
With cocktail dresses, you automatically think short and tight. Given that the dresses I've designed in my previous challenges were short and tight, I thought that it was time to switch it up and stand out a bit. Thinking out of the box wouldn't hurt either.
I initially thought about a cocktail pants suit but assumed that wouldn't fly because the guidelines were to create a dress. Through development, I came up with a shorts jumpsuit with a short over skirt; it would be both cute and fun and I think Hiedi would have loved it! I would have taken a risk and done it in the metallic gold and purple lame but in my head it looks amazing!
Judgement-wise, I think I would have been in the top. I don't think I would have won, but it's definitely a fresh take on the cocktail dress.
