How to Casually Style a Maxi Skirt

I am honestly loving how this maxi skirt came out! It’s so full of life and energy. Especially when I hit the twirl. It was inspired by Christian Dior and the New Look Era with cinched waists and voluminous gowns and I think this skirt executes on that feeling even though it’s more relaxed. For full details on the design of the skirt, you can click here because today, we’re going to talk about how to style a maxi skirt in a casual way.

I know, I know, the New Look Era was all about femininity and glam and getting dolled up as a contrast to the conservative utilitarian styles during WWII, so why would I style a skirt inspired by glam in a casual way? Because I’m the girl who lives in t-shirt & jeans. Yes, I can get dolled up on special occasions, but in my day to day, comfort and ease reign supreme.

Before we get into that though, if you’d like to see 3 ways I’d wear my two tiered maxi skirt, you can watch this video:

5 Ways to Casually Style a Maxi Skirt

1. Pair it with a graphic t-shirt.

The easiest way to dress down a voluminous number is to pair it with a graphic t-shirt. It doesn’t get more casual than a graphic t-shirt in my opinion. They’re easy to throw on and very relatable. Maxi skirts can come off as luxury really quick. Whether it’s the volume, like in the one I made, that makes you feel like a princess when you twirl or if the fabric is a satin or silk material and has that luxurious sheen to it, maxi skirts easily give off polished vibes. To combat the polished vibes, you go to the other end of the spectrum and find a graphic t-shirt.

2. Throw on some sneakers.

So, we’re just going to continue our journey down to the other end of the spectrum with this one. I think what once used to get you side eye has become accepted a lot more openly these days and that’s wearing anything considered luxe, glam, tailored, upscale or boujee and wearing it with a pair of crisp sneakers. Since high school, I’ve appreciated this look, it just took others a minute to come around. That’s okay though.

So, again, for the same reason as the graphic t-shirt, the sneakers are a casual staple. Sneakers either make you feel chill or like you’re about to do some exercise. A hard contrast to the polished vibes spoken of earlier.

3. Wear fun jewelry.

I like big, chunky costume jewelry. You know, the kind that you can’t really take seriously? Well, that’s me. While I haven’t done the bold colors just yet, I will give you some chunky dunky rhinestones. You might think that rhinestones aren’t casual at all. That they in fact would glam up the maxi skirt, which is what we’re trying not to do here. Thing with this is, I feel if you blatantly know an item isn’t real, it kind of makes it comical. It’s a good appreciation piece but not one for stunting. It’s kind of like everyone being in on the joke, if you will. We’re all just here to have a good ol’ time and not take life too seriously.

4. Put on any kind of sweater.

A knit sweater. A crewneck sweater. An oversized sweater. A cardigan sweater. Any of them. Because they are the definition of comfort. And I think I’m just going to end that point there ...

5. Finish it up with a leather moto or denim jacket.

Leather and denim both symbolize rebellion in fashion. They both have an, “I do what I want when I want” mentality. They answer to no one. They’re relaxed and casual and go on about their business. That makes them the perfect candidate to combat the prissy or elegant nature of the maxi skirt.
